The Sounders FC were reminded of that on Tuesday when they made their first appearance at Qwest Field for the 2010 season. “It’s great. Obviously the last time we were here we didn’t get the result that we wanted in our last game against Houston. So, it’s got that memory, but it’s also got the memory of the opening game and a lot of the good accomplishments we had all last season,” Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid said. “Every time you walk in here, even though the seats are blue, I see green everywhere. It just reminds me that we are about to embark on the season. I think it’s a good reminder for the players that the season is around the corner.” The Sounders and their fans will have a chance to break in the stadium for the 2010 season on Thursday when Seattle faces their old rivals to the south, the Portland Timbers of the USL, in the Community Shield preseason match benefitting the Sounders FC four charity partners. While the defense has been solid, going 293 scoreless minutes since allowing their last preseason goal, the offense has been inconsistent. However, Schmid understands what it takes to get Freddie Ljungberg, Fredy Montero and Steve Zakuani going on the offensive end while they wait for the return of Nate Jaqua, who has missed most of the preseason due to injury.

A bitter Rivalry. (SoundersfC vs Timbers)

This Thursday, SoundersFC take on the Portland Timbers in the only Pre-Season game to be held at QWEST. This game is special, not only because its only $10 per ticket with the proceeds going to charity, but because it will be the first time we host Portland in what is known as one of the most fierce rivalries in the soccer world.

The bitter rivalry goes back to the 70’s during the NASL days, and has persisted through the semi-pro leagues before the MLS caught on. Portland is joining the MLS in 2011, and they have something to prove on Thursday.

Mostly though, this game is about the fans, not so much the soccer. This will be a spectacle unlike any other game at QWEST field.

There is also a more compelling reason to go. There is a labor dispute between the players union and owners, and the league is currently operating without a contract. Things this week have gone downhill, and its possible a work stoppage will occur before the season starts. So this could be the last Sounders game for awhile. So get your fix in now!

Here are some quotes from Assistant Coach Brian Schmetzer who has been with the Sounders for years, and experienced the Rivalry first hand.

Brian Schmetzer – Assistant Coach
“Some of those reserve games were bloody affairs. Sometimes it was good soccer, but it was always hard soccer and it was kill or be killed,” Schmetzer said. “The soccer got a little better at the first team level, but there was always an underlying tone of disdain for each other.

“The Portland fans are colorful and they support their team and that is something they take pride in. Sometimes they stretch the boundaries a little bit.”

"@GorillaFC will be at the St. Baldrick’s Fundraiser at Fado from 6-9pm on March 15. The Sounders announced earlier this week that the home opener on March 25 against first—year side, the Philadelphia Union, has been sold out. Additonally, the Sounders May 8th game against the Los Angeles Galaxy is sold out as well. With a capacity of 35800 set for MLS games and with 32,000 season tickets already sold, the Sounders have a very good chance of selling out every home game this season. While the Sounders have the best fans in MLS, the question is whether the second year Sounders can be as successful on the park as they are off it?

"I am really motivated. It is a big challenge because as a player and as a man, I wish to settle and live in Seattle. For now, I remain totally committed, totally focused on Twente, and doing whatever I can to help them win the league and the cup. When I arrive in Seattle, I’m not just coming to play, I’m coming to succeed. That is my goal. I feel I can contribute because of my experience, my spirit, my commitment and my goals. Of course, that’s the key, goals and assists.
